What is the tax 2290 form?
This is a form the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses to tax Heavy Vehicle Use. This tax form is used to determine how much taxes are due during a select tax year for all highway motor vehicles that are in equal or excess of 55,000 pounds. Tax 2290 period starts on July 1st and ends on June 30 the following year (example: July 1 2019 to June 30 2020). Tax 2290 is paid upfront for the entire year or for remaining months from the first month used.

Reasons for Using the IRS Tax 2290 Form
There are several reasons why you will need to use the IRS Tax 2290 Form when filing your taxes. These include the following:
  • The IRS Tax 2290 Form is used as a method to determine the use tax for a highway vehicle that has a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more
  • Determining and remitting payment that is due for the taxes on a motor vehicle in which you have previously completed a suspension statement for a vehicle, on another IRS Tax 2290 Form, which has exceeded the allotted mileage limit.
  • To determine what the new tax owed is when a vehicle suddenly exceeds the weight limit, which lands that vehicle in a new tax category.
  • When filing a suspension claim for a highway vehicle that is expected to be used less than 5,000 miles in a tax year, (or, if an agricultural vehicle, used fewer than 7,500 miles in the year).
  • To file a claim for tax 2290 already paid for a vehicle that was either stolen, sold or wreaked, or used less than 5,000 miles (7500 miles if used for agricultural purposes) in a certain tax year.
  • When you acquire a used vehicle that has already been reported as being in suspension for tax 2290 purposes.
  • To determine and remit payment for the tax 2290 that is owed on a newly acquired used taxable vehicle that year.
